Methods 1: Resolve Cartridge Missing, Depleted Ink, and Incompatible Cartridge Issue

The errors come because of   a communication error between the printer and the cartridge chip. However we are explaining here a simple fix. Let’s see:

Step 1: Check the Ink Cartridge Number

To proceed with the following step, one should be sure about the cartridge model numbers that it should match your printer and country or region.

  1.  First, open the door or lid to the location where the cartridges are accessible. Now, wait until the carriage stops moving before continuing.
  2. Then you should look at the cartridge labels.

In the second step to fix the ink cartridge error, reset the printer by the below steps:

  1. Remove the rechargeable battery from your printer if it has one.
  2. Disconnect the printer’s power cable while it is still turned on.
  3. Take the power line out of the outlet.
  4. Then, wait for 60 seconds before moving further.
  5. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
  6. Finally, turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Step 3: Clean the Ink cartridge and carriage electrical contacts

Cleaning the cartridge may resolve this issue. Do it by removing debris or build-up from the cartridges and the carriage. Let’s begin with the steps:

  1. Uncover the cartridge access area by opening the door or lid. Do not proceed until the carriage has stopped moving.
  2. Take out the cartridge from the carriage that was mentioned in the error notice.
  • Carriages with cartridge latches: Open<latch<pull the cartridge up and out of the slot.
  • Carriages without cartridge latches: Gently press down on the cartridge to release it<pull it out of the slot.
  1. Hold the cartridge tightly from both sides and remove any protective tape on the contacts.
  2. Now lightly dampen a lint-free cloth with distilled water, to wipe the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge.
  3. Again, dampen lightly a lint-free cloth or swab with distilled water, to clean the electrical contacts in the carriage.
  4. Now, wait for 10 minutes so that contacts get dry, and then reinsert the cartridge into its color-coded slot.
  5. You can repeat these steps for the other cartridge if it was indicated in the error message.
  6. At last you can close the door or lid to the cartridge access area.


Now, you have cleaned your cartridge and carriage electrical contacts and if you are still in trouble, you can proceed with cleaning the cartridge and carriage contacts process a second time.


Step 4: Problematic Ink cartridges must get replaced

Find problematic ink cartridges and install a new cartridge to resolve ink-related errors can be a better strategy.

  1. First get a replacement cartridge. You have two options for this.
  • Printer is enrolled in Instant Ink. Replacement cartridges are included in your subscription. In case you have another Instant Ink cartridge on hand, you can install it or contact HP support for Ink cartridge for a new one.
  • Printer is NOT enrolled in Instant Ink. Visit HP Store or 123printersupport.com to find and purchase compatible supplies. We always recommend our users use genuine HP cartridges.
  1. After replacement, open the door or lid to the cartridge access area and wait until the carriage stops moving before proceeding further.
  2. Now, check indication of error message and remove the cartridge, and insert the new cartridge into the slot.
  3. You should repeat these steps to replace any other cartridges indicated in the error message.
  4. And at last, close the door or lid to the cartridge access area, and then follow any instructions to align the printer.
